Raine Navin (1934 – 2016) and Gunilla Skyttla (1934 – 2016) were two artists whose joint home in the city of Kalmar was a full-scale creativity laboratory.
They worked in a totally cross-border mode at a time when clearly defined boundaries between art, crafts and domestic handicrafts were regarded as important. Based on their training in textiles at Konstfack in Stockholm they experimented with forms of expression and techniques in a manner that no one had ever previously done. With inclusive and affectionate humour, but also in full seriousness and in recognition of life’s painful aspects, they transformed the most basic elements into something wholly unexpected and expressive of the most striking new insights.
Raine Navin och Gunilla Skyttla were performance artists in their daily lives and they exhibited, taught and were generally inspirational all over their native land. They opened many people’s eyes and expanded their vision through their ability to make art visible and through the extraordinary and immutable force of their imagination.
