Anders Zorn, Selfportrait, 1896
Oil on canvas
Zorn has portrayed himself with a cigarette while taking a break from work. Dazzlingly bright slanting daylight illuminates his white smock and highlights the artist's temple. But the studio is gloomy, and shapes and details are hard to discern. In the background, the model is seated. Zorn describes her as "a beautiful Italian with magnificent red hair". The colours on his palette are those required for the painting: white, black, gold ochre and vermilion. This painting is an example of Zorn's use of few colours in a rich variety of pale and dark shades.
