Irving Penn, Lennart Nilsson, 2004
Gelatin Silver Print
National Portrait Gallery
Irving Penn's portrait of Lennart Nilsson was commissioned exclusively for the National Portrait Gallery. The photographer depicted his Swedish colleague as a man from the cold North; the fur hat and winter coat were Penn's idea. As a contrast, he chose a softer alternative lighting, suggesting a grey Scandinavian twilight mood, instead of stark snow-white. The lighting was arranged to draw attention to the eyes and the hand – the photographer's most important assets.
