"One Midsummer Night, They Walked with Bianca Maria Deep Into the Woods", Bland Tomtar och Troll, 1913

Artist: John Bauer

Title: "One Midsummer Night, They Walked with Bianca Maria Deep Into the Woods", Bland Tomtar och Troll, 1913

Description:

John Bauer enjoyed walking in the forest with his sketchbook in his native province of Småland. He liked watching how the rays of the sun played through the trees and perhaps it was the sun that inspired him to draw the delicate princess who lights up the dark, ancient forest. The story of the princess and the troll is focused on the ancient troll who becomes so infatuated with the princess that he steals her from her carriage and places his own child there instead.

Rabbits

Artist: François Desportes

Title: Rabbits

Description:

Alexandre-François Desportes is known mostly for his still lifes and hunting scenes; he was elected to France’s Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture as an animal painter. He got many royal commissions, mainly from Louis XIV and Louis XV. Despite the wealth of detail of the rabbits, this may be an unfinished study used by his son and assistant Claude-François Desportes. It also used to be thought that the background was the work of another artist.

Still Life with Wine, Fruit and Oysters

Artist: Jan Davidsz. de Heem

Title: Still Life with Wine, Fruit and Oysters

Description:

Sumptuous still lifes were popular in the seventeenth century. Many were painted in Holland, but were subsequently spread to other countries. Just as in this arrangement, European elements were often mixed with exotic components. Here we see blackberries, raspberries, grapes, ears of wheat, acorns, hazelnuts, a pomegranate, and oysters. The exotic parts—an orange, a lemon, and a Chinese bowl—witness of the era’s contact with distant lands. We also catch a glimpse of a snail and a butterfly—motifs that are sometimes interpreted as symbols of death and decay.

The Triumph of Venus

Artist: François Boucher

Title: The Triumph of Venus

Description:

Venus, the goddess of love, was born full-grown from the foam of the sea. Here she is seated in a seashell, surrounded by sea creatures and representations of love: dolphins, tritons, naiads and cupids. The interacting figures, in voluptuous poses, create a scene of lively, sensual movement. Remarkably, the artist made only a few sketches before starting on this painting, despite its advanced composition. It was commissioned by Carl Gustaf Tessin.

Marmot

Artist: David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl

Title: Marmot

Description:

From the information on the artist’s bill, we know that this is one single animal, depicted in different positions. Like a natural science illustration, the painting was to show the marmot in characteristic poses: eating, scouting and making a warning cry, as well as walking. Its natural habitat is the Alps. For this reason, the background is a rock. Karl XI very commissioned Ehrenstrahl to paint both domestic and wild animals in his possession.

Arco Naturale, Capri

Artist: Thomas Fearnley

Title: Arco Naturale, Capri

Description:

Today Fearnley is best known for his oil studies. They were acclaimed after his death when artist Johan Christian Dahl recommended the Norwegian state to buy them. Fearnley often chose fleeting motifs giving him technical challenges. In the scene from Capri, the purpose seems to have been capturing the distinctive evening light. The couple with the guide in the foreground is probably a later addition to make the painting more commercially viable.

Still-life with frogs, wild roses, shells and butterflies

Artist: Paolo Porpora

Title: Still-life with frogs, wild roses, shells and butterflies

Description:

The paintings are examples of the sottobosco motif, close-up depictions of amphibians and insects. The animals are represented with scientific accuracy and seemingly in their natural environment, but they were usually studied separately and then assembled into an aesthetically pleasing composition. The subject is basically an allegory of the struggle between good and evil.
