Summer exhibition 2021 at Gripsholm Castle: 23 Swedish migrants (17th century up until today) .

Text (Denna text kommer visas under rubriken för webbturen):

Common to all these migrants is that they have played decisive roles and made active contributions to Sweden’s development. Their fates are varied, there is societal breadth and cultural diversity. The migrants represent Swedish history from the Great Power Era in the 17th Century to the democratic society of the 21st century. Queens and servants are found here; a majority are renowned in the arts and culture – artists, singers and authors. Some names are surprising, because they are now so naturally associated with Sweden. There is also a serious tone that reflects the horrors of the 20th century – forced migration and survivors of the Holocaust.

Self-portrait, 1938

Artist: Peter Weiss

Title: Self-portrait, 1938

Description:

Works such as The Investigation (1965) and The Aesthetics of Resistance (1975-81) made Peter Weiss one of the leading German-language authors of the 20th century. He was also an artist and filmmaker. Like so many other central European intellectuals with Jewish roots, he was forced to emigrate in the 1930s. This self-portrait from 1938 has a surreal tone; the blue balloon, freely moving upward, contrasts with the gloomy tracks and walls.
