Six centuries of contemporary art: 19th Century – Modern life

Text (Denna text kommer visas under rubriken för webbturen):

Modern life made a breakthrough during the 19th century. This was a turbulent time in Europe. Wars and revolutions were followed by political reforms and economic growth. Society was changed by new technologies. Railways and factories were built. Improvements in agriculture led to a gradual migration from rural areas to cities. Commerce and entertainment developed. All of this was reflected in both art and design. Artists depicted the inhabitants of the cities and their activities. Life in the countryside emerged as an idyllic escape from the downsides of city life, such as cramped living conditions and poor health. The answer was open air landscape painting, using broad brush strokes and a colourful palette.

Lady in a Train Window

Artist: Anna Nordgren

Title: Lady in a Train Window

Description:

The railroad was one of the most important aspects of 19th century social development. Artists were fascinated by it and it enabled them to easily get out of town to rural areas in order to paint. The train journeys provided material for countless subject matters in both the visual arts and in literature. Anna Nordgren spent a long time in both England and France. In this painting, she focuses on leave-taking, either from the family or from a fiancé.

Vase

Artist: Albert Louis Dammouse

Title: Vase

Description:

Dammouse experimented with clays and glazes to create objects in a lively, spontaneous style that was remarkably different from the moulded objects with printed decor produced by the porcelain factories. This vase has simple shapes that serve, like a painter’s canvas, as a background for plant decors in harmonious, fluid colours. Dammouse was successful at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1878. He designed for several companies and started his own company in 1892. The Swedish industrialist and collector Carl Robert Lamm bought four vases from the artist’s studio in 1896.

Young Boy Peeling a Pear

Artist: Édouard Manet

Title: Young Boy Peeling a Pear

Description:

Édouard Manet was a radical artist, both in his way of painting and through his choice of motifs. He was the first to truly make art of the modern life or Parisian everyday life. The Pear Peeler is painted in the broad, almost sketchy way that broke away from finer academic painting. The piece was owned by Anders Zorn, who received it from a friend in Paris before donating it to Nationalmuseum.

Esbjörn at the Study Corner

Artist: Carl Larsson

Title: Esbjörn at the Study Corner

Description:

Carl and Karin Larsson made a life for themselves in Dalarna, which steered away from modern city life. At the same time, their philosophy of life was modern and innovative. They introduced strong colours, like the blue of the old Baroque cupboard. The children were allowed to take up space on terms corresponding more to that of adults. Esbjörn is doing his homework at a place traditionally reserved for “the master of the house”.

Artist: Carl Larsson

Title: Letter-Writing

Description:

Carl and Karin Larsson made a home for themselves in Dalarna, which steered away from modern city life. But their philosophy of life was, in fact, innovative. The girl writing a letter was the daughter of one of Larsson’s employees.

Vase

Artist: Unknown

Title: Vase

Description:

In the 1890s a new style was developed: Art Nouveau. Nature was the main source of inspiration. The decor was organically arranged, strictly combined by the artists, with well-balanced forms based on nature. Experiments were made with different techniques and glazes. Artists were engaged by the factories and, from the beginning of the 20th century, more and more women were working as designers.

Heavy labour was a common theme of the late 19th century modern French art. Hugo Salmson became the most “French” in his painting style of all Swedes. The Organ Rehearsal

Artist: Henry Lerolle

Title: The Organ Rehearsal

Description:

“You expect the woman to start singing!” The painting was perceived to be so natural that several in the audience are said to have exclaimed this when it was exhibited. Lerolle was a key person in the circle around Edgar Degas and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and often painted scenes from the modern city. When told that the right part of the picture gave the impression of being empty, he replied that it was reserved for the sound of the song.
