A burning issue in the 1920s and 1930s was how art, architecture and design could help in developing a society that understood the needs of both individuals and the state. Functionalism saw beauty and quality in simple forms and good function. Products should be of good quality, mass produced and inexpensive. But there was also a luxurious design for those who did not have to think about money. This was not the radical example of the style, nor was it acquired by Nationalmuseum at the time. In recent years the museum has expanded its collections with examples of luxury functionalism. It was an era of exclusive materials, movie stars and cocktails.

Title: Greta Garbo, actress, from the film The Kiss
Description:
Photographs were very important when Garbo’s image was created. In the portraits produced by the film company, as well as in her roles, she seemed inaccessible and mysterious. Garbo did not match the sweet feminine ideals represented by many other stars, but was instead popularized as a tragic femme fatale. Today the image of her face is more famous than the movies. The Garbo myth is far greater than the life and roles of Greta Gustafsson.

Title: Cocktail glass, model 3540/3
Description:
The glamorous world of movies was reflected in lavish cocktail cabinets with accessories made of shiny metal and sparkling glass. Today we no longer have the knowledge of how, or for what purpose, many of the designed objects from the 20th century were supposed to be used. Today, traditional gifts made of silver or glass, previously purchased for baptisms, weddings and birthdays, are no longer as common. This is one of the reasons why many design companies and factories are no longer in business
