Six Centuries of Contemporary Art: 2000s Identity and Communication

Text (Denna text kommer visas under rubriken för webbturen):

Today, almost everyone owns a mobile phone. We communicate in a more intense way than ever before. We send fast picture messages and short texts in a continuous flow – but the outcome is not always positive. The new technology can easily become an addiction, create sleeping problems, and make people both happy and sad. Messages and information are also conveyed through different expressions of contemporary art. For a long time, we have interpreted images in the form of textiles, paintings, photos, etc. A brooch can tell you something about its wearer, a book cover or a poster communicates directly with the viewer, and crafts are often used for political messages or as comments on current phenomena.

Skulptur "Snippan"

Artist: Åsa Jungnelius

Title: Skulptur "Snippan"

Description:

Before the word “snippa” for the female genitalia was common in the Swedish language, Åsa Jungnelius wanted to promote a neutral way of viewing the vagina. In the object Snippan the link with both sexuality and motherhood is problematized. The glass sculpture is covered with silver foil, which means that the world around it is reflected, mirrored in the female sex, with all the conceptions that have been ascribed to it over the years.

Textile "St. George and the dragon"

Artist: Anna Sjons Nilsson

Title: Textile "St. George and the dragon"

Description:

One of the most well-known subject matters in art history has been given a modern interpretation. The princess defeats the dragon and saves a passive and helpless Saint George. Nilsson wants to discuss and emphasize the problems with static gender roles. She points to the difficulty of achieving equality, where the pursuit sometimes implies that the woman must wear traditional male armour, and where the man may need to be reduced and made passive.
