Self-Portraits and Portraits of Artist Friends

Text (Denna text kommer visas under rubriken för webbturen):

From early on, self-portraits became a vehicle for self-esteem and claims to social status. Artists sought to emulate the dress and costly furnishings of their clients. The ambition to belong to the upper ranks of society lived on in the 18th century, but its manifestations changed. Dress became seemingly unconventional. The portraitists’ facial expressions as they regarded themselves in the mirror, however, were still concentrated and intense. In portraits of friends, the subjects seem more relaxed. Sometimes only a sketch pad or portfolio reveals that this is not a landowner, but an artist.

Selfportrait

Artist: Pehr Hilleström d.ä.

Title: Selfportrait

Description:

Hilleström was one of the most productive Swedish artists of the 18th century, above all as a genre painter. Most of his subjects are drawn from domestic interiors, but he also painted images of festivities and spectacles at court. A good number of self-portraits are known, but this is perhaps his most restrained and informal one, with no attributes to indicate that Hilleström was an artist.

Selfportrait

Artist: Olof Arenius

Title: Selfportrait

Description:

Olof Arenius was not only a leading portraitist of the Age of Liberty, but also influential as a teacher to several 18th-century Swedish artists. In this self-portrait, possibly made while Arenius was still a student in Holland in the 1730s, he has depicted himself in the continental manner, wearing a cap and with a self-assured air. His brushwork is free and his use of line sure. He no doubt found his models in contemporary British or German art.

Selfportrait

Artist: David Richter d.ä.

Title: Selfportrait

Description:

Richter belonged to a large family of artists, among them his nephew Gustaf Lundberg. Like many other Swedish painters, Richter trained and worked abroad during the years of unrest in the late 17th century. His works thus reflect a continental, chiefly French, tradition, as we see in this self-portrait. Richter has cheekily depicted himself in an unbuttoned blouse with a long blue ribbon, a fashion among the aristocratic dandies of the time.

Michael Dahl the Elder

Artist: Michael Dahl d.ä.

Title: Michael Dahl the Elder

Description:

Dahl was an early example of a Swedish artist who was active abroad. He trained on the continent before settling in London, where he achieved acclaim as a portraitist. Dahl was extremely market-focused and had his own showroom for clients. In this self-portrait he is wearing a hooded cloak and a red cap. The latter concealed his close-cropped hair when he was not wearing a wig, but was also the distinguishing mark of an intellectual.

Title: Johan Fredrik Martin, Draughtsman, the Artist's Brother

Johan Fredrik Martin received his first artistic training with his brother Elias in London, going on to study with the engraver Francesco Bartolozzi.
