En utställning om samlaren och galleristen Agnes Widlund som med sitt galleri Konstsalongen Samlaren utmanade den svenska konstscenen under mer än trettio år i mitten av 1900-talet. Utställningskataloger och -foldrar, pressklipp, foton, brev och annat arkivmaterial belyser en betydelsefull personlighet inom konstvärlden.

Orden i citatet är galleristen Agnes Widlunds ur en intervju i Dagen Nyheter 1965. Då hade hon i drygt tjugo år drivit Konstsalongen Samlaren, Birger Jarlsgatan 1, ett av Stockholms mest framgångsrika gallerier under 1950- och 1960-talen. Under tre decennier, 1943–1977, utmanade Samlaren den svenska konstscenen med experimentella framåtblickande konstprojekt. Agnes Widlund (1910–2005) föddes i Ungern. Efter studentexamen reste hon till Paris för att studera. Där träffade hon den svenske läkaren Erik Widlund, de gifte sig, bosatte sig i Stockholm, men skildes åt 1939.
Samlaren hade en internationell profil. Widlund använde sitt kontaktnät inom den franska konstvärlden. Hon kände konstnärer som Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger och gallerister som Denis René och Louise Leiris. Samlaren var också en experimentell arena för dåtidens unga svenska konstnärer och konsthistoriker. Pontus Hultén, Oscar Reuterswärd, Carlo Derkert och Olle Baertling ordnade där uppmärksammade utställningar. Konstsamlaren Theodor (Teto) Ahrenberg skapade med Widlunds hjälp en samling i världsklass. Där ingick Henri Matisses collage Apollon som idag finns på Moderna Museet. Ahrenberg ville bygga ett privat konstmuseum i Stockholm och tillsammans med Widlund engagerades den franske arkitekten Le Corbusier för att gestalta idén.
Under perioden 1958–1965 drev Widlund en filial i sin villa på Lidingö med konsthantverk, heminredning och skulptur i syfte att skapa möten mellan konstnärer, arkitekter, stadsplanerare och konstintresserade. Under 1960-talet växte engagemanget för konstens roll i det offentliga rummet. Detta kulminerade i projektet Samlaren i det fria, 1967–1973, en glaspaviljong och en skulpturpark på Gärdet i Stockholm.
Utställningen byggde huvudsakligen på material hämtat ur Nationalmuseums enskilda arkiv, Galleri Samlaren Agnes Widlund och Konstbibliotekets samling av utställningskataloger.
Utställningen visades i Gamla biblioteket på mellanplan.
