Ordering images

How do I order images?

We recommend that you first check if the image you are looking for is freely available for direct download on Wikimedia Commons.

Images available on Wikimedia Commons are high resolution and public domain. This means you are free to download and use the images for any purpose.

What if the image I am looking for is not on Wikimedia?

Then you can make an image order by filling out and submitting this online image order form.

First you select the type of use you intend for the image, followed by entering your contact information and billing information in case your image order is subject to a fee. Then you specify which image(s) you would like to order.

Please note that the more information you provide us about the artwork, the faster we will be able to handle your order. Information about the artwork includes title, name of artist, inventory number etc.

Tip: Providing us with the artwork’s inventory number is the surest way to facilitate handling time and prevent misunderstandings/errors.

Find the artwork’s inventory number by looking it up in our online collections database.

What if I cannot find the image in the museum online database?

All the images that we have available will be uploaded to the online database. If an object in the online database does not have an image, we unfortunately do not have one.

Obtaining an image will require new photography.

If you want to order new photography, please submit the image order form and we will get back to you.

Is it possible to order new photography of artworks that only have a black-and-white image or no image at all?

The possibility to take new photographs of artworks greatly depends on the current workload of our photographers, the location and availability of the artwork and the amount of work that would be required to carry through a photo shooting.

You are always welcome to send us an image order for artwork that lack an image/only have a black-and-white image, and we will be happy to assess the possibility of taking a new photograph for you.

Though we strive to provide you with the images you request as far as possible, we reserve the right to decline a photography order if it is deemed not possible to carry through.

To request new photography, please fill out and submit this online image order form.

How are my images delivered?

We will send you an e-mail with an image download link.

If you haven’t received an e-mail, please check your spam folder.

When will I receive my images?

We handle all orders as soon as we can, by order date.

The delivery time varies depending on how many orders we currently have to process, but usually images are sent out within a week.

If you have ordered new photography, the delivery time depends on the current workload of our staff and may take up to 4 weeks. For a more specific time frame, please contact us.

How do I pay?

If your image order is subject to a fee, an invoice will be sent to the billing address stated in the order. If you would like to receive the invoice by e-mail, please let us know.

Note: The invoice will be sent to the billing address even if you have requested it by e-mail. The invoices will be duplicates, so you can just disregard one of them.

Using images

How may I use my images?

The images may be used for the purpose specified in the order.

If you want to use the images for other purposes, please contact us via the questionnaire and we will help you.

If the image is freely available on Wikimedia, you may use the image for any purpose without having to contact us.

For more detailed description of how you may use our images, please see Rights and Reproductions.

How should I credit the images?

In general, we will inform you about the correct photo credit with the delivery of the images. However, if this information is not provided, the correct photo credit line is “Photo: [Photographer’s First and Last Name] / Nationalmuseum”.

If the photographer’s name is not known, the credit line is simply “Photo: Nationalmuseum”.

For more detailed description of how you properly credit our images, please see Rights and Reproductions.

How do I find the name of the photographer?

When you have received your image, you might be able to find the photographer’s name by checking the image file’s Properties.

In Windows you simply right click the image file and select Properties at the bottom of the list. In the window that opens, under the tab called “Information” you find a field called “Copyright”, which should contain the photographer’s name.

Alternatively, feel free to ask us for the photographer’s name, and we will be happy to provide you with this information if it is known.
