One of Nationalmuseum's goals is to promote international and intercultural exchange. The American Friends of the Nationalmuseum of Sweden Foundation was established in 2017 to support the museum from the US.
The American Friends' aim is to strengthen the ties between Sweden and the US and increase public appreciation of art and design on both sides of the Atlantic.
In practice, the foundation plans to contribute to acquisitions, enable American collectors and individuals to donate objects and artworks of value and interest to the museum, and support the museum's research programmes and exhibitions that are particularly relevant to Swedish-American relations.
Beauty and the Unexpected
The American Friends' first major initiative was supporting 'Beauty and the Unexpected – Modern and Contemporary American Crafts', an exhibition of modern and contemporary American crafts. Curated by Helen Drutt English, it opened in March 2023. Three years after the exhibition, all items will be donated to Nationalmuseum.
