Since 1917, Nationalmuseum has regularly lent out artworks to other museums, cultural institutions and government agencies on a long-term basis. We do so to make more works of art available to the public.
Artworks are primarily lent to other museums and government agencies, where they can be publicly displayed in suitable surroundings and with adequate security.
Loans are only granted to private institutions and businesses if these are housed in premises of particular cultural and historical significance, or if the artwork would be able to play a significant pedagogical role in its new context.
We do not tend to approve loans that would be placed in hallways, corridors, stairwells, break rooms or private offices.
