Book a private guided tour of the exhibition To the sea! and join us on the beaches where artists and bathers came together in the emerging bathing culture around the turn of the 20th century.

The exhibition explores how coastal life, bathing tourism, and summer stays by the sea became a new social and cultural phenomenon in the late 19th century. As seaside resorts emerged along the coasts of Europe, artists were drawn there too. Impressionists and Nordic artists depicted the sea, the light, and life on the beaches in paintings that capture both the experience of nature and the rise of modern leisure.

During the tour, you will be introduced to the exhibition’s themes and to some of the artists who shaped the image of life by the sea, including Claude Monet, Anders Zorn, and Peder Severin Krøyer. Together with one of the museum’s art educators, you will explore how the new bathing culture inspired artists in Europe and the United States, and how the sea became a recurring motif in modern art.

The tour takes approximately 60 minutes and may start every hour and half hour.

Number of participants

Maximum 20 people per group.

For safety reasons and to ensure you have an optimal experience, we do not offer tours to groups of more than 20 people. If you arrive at the museum with a larger group, extra participants will not be able to participate in the tour.

Prices

Weekdays, up to and including 15:30, SEK 3 000 (in Swedish, SEK 2 500) + admission fee of SEK 110 per person

Thursdays from 16:00, SEK 4 000 (in Swedish, SEK 3 500)

Saturdays and Sundays, SEK 4 000 (in Swedish, SEK 3 500) + admission fee of SEK 110 per person

Payment

You can pay by invoice after the tour, or by card or Swish right before the tour at the museum's ticketing desk.

Group tour participants get to skip the queue at the main entrance. Simply take the entrance to the right and show your booking confirmation to our staff.

Cancellations and changes

If you wish to cancel or change your reservation, you must notify bokningen@nationalmuseum.se no less than 2 weeks before your visit.

You will be charged the full price of the tour if you cancel less than 2 weeks before your visit.
