Our restaurant is meant to feel like a comfortable living room. Here, you get to enjoy culinary experiences as well as ambitious artworks and design.
Nationalmuseum's restaurant occupies a space that was previously used to preserve and store art. Now, this space has been reopened to the public and remodelled to be much more inviting.
From fork to furniture to fitting
Nationalmuseum's mission is to make art and design accessible to as many people as possible. Naturally, we wanted the new restaurant to be an art project in and of itself when the museum reopened in 2018 after a five-year renovation.
Designer Matti Klenell was commissioned to develop the concept behind the restaurant. He in turn chose to collaborate with TAF Studio, Carina Seth Andersson, and Stina Löfgren.
Together, they created the restaurant's overall environment, the dining experience, and about 80 objects diners would meet, from fixtures and furniture to table- and glassware. We call this collection 'NM& – en ny samling/A New Collection'.
Ten designers (Monica Backström, Åsa Jungnelius, Simon Klenell, Katja Pettersson, Ludvig Löfgren, Carina Seth Andersson, Gabriella Gustafson, Matti Klenell, Stina Löfgren, Mattias Ståhlbom) developed the glass globes for the lamps in the restaurant. Mould-makers created wooden moulds for the glass to be blown in.
In August 2017, they teamed up with glassblowers, silversmiths, metalsmiths, and Örsjö Lighting AB's designer in the Boda Glasbruk glassworks to make the globes. Some of the pieces created that summer are now part of the awe-inspiring chandelier in the restaurant.
