The exhibition was shown at Läckö Castle, Lidköping, Västergötland.
Every summer Nationalmuseum arranges an exhibition at Läckö Castle in Västergötland. The sumsmer 2019 exhibition displayed unique works of art in glass by about 50 artists that come from Nationalmuseum’s extensive collection of modern glass art from 1960 onwards.
Art glass has flourished in Sweden for more than a century and has attained an international reputation. During the first decades of the 20th century the glassworks were where developments took place. Artists produced new designs, decoration and techniques. The glass objects were then produced together with the craftsmen at the works. The close collaboration of the glassblowers and the artists provided unique guarantees of high quality, both when it came to the workmanship and the artistic creativity.
In the 1960s the artist and the glassblower were often one and the same person, as many glass designers worked in their own studios or workshops. This gave them greater freedom to experiment and focus on artistic expression instead of financial considerations and market shares. Glass objects that had originally been based on utility articles now became increasingly sculptural. This occurred alongside the operations of the glassworks in this field. Today it is mostly the individual glass designers that account for innovations and explore new paths in their art.
This exhibition displayed unique works of art in glass by about 50 artists that come from Nationalmuseum’s extensive collection of modern glass art from 1960 onwards. For the exhibition Nationalmuseum asked the artists who are still alive to express their own ideas about their works in words.
At the same time a special exhibition was arranged in the Treasury of glass designs from the 17th century. These unique objects also came from Nationalmuseum’s collections.
