Queen Christina, Greta Garbo, Max Martin. Who will earn a place in the National Portrait Collection? And who gets to decide?

On November 6, the exhibition Portraits! opens, featuring over a hundred depictions of Swedish figures from past and present — athletes, artists, royals. But one spot in the exhibition remains empty, and we need your help to fill it. Who should have their portrait added to the collection? The majority’s choice will determine which portrait is purchased and displayed in the exhibition. Voting is open until 31 December.

The nominees and the reasons for their nomination

Karin Mamma Andersson, long one of Sweden's most acclaimed artists, whose paintings have been exhibited all over the world.

Kosovare Asllani, for many years one of Swedish football's most influential players, with a long career in the national football team and in leading international clubs.

Anna Bjerde, Managing Director of Operations at the World Bank with a mission to reduce global poverty.

Neneh Cherry, singer who made her global breakthrough in the late 1980s with the album Raw Like Sushi. Her autobiography, A Thousand Threads, published in 2024, was nominated for the Women's Prize for Non-Fiction.

Armand Duplantis, pole vaulter who has broken numerous world records and been named the world's best athlete three times.

Josef Fares, film director and internationally successful video game developer.

Anne L'Huillier, physicist at Lund University, who was awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering a way to create extremely short light pulses that can ‘photograph’ electrons and give us new insight into the inner workings of atoms.

Silvana Imam, rapper with several acclaimed albums, most recently Tro (Belief) from 2025. Also played roles in film and theater.

Alexander Isak, footballer who, when he was signed by Liverpool FC in 2025, became the most expensive player in the history of the British Premier League.

Jonas Hassen Khemiri, author and playwright who made his breakthrough with the novel Ett öga rött (One Eye Red) in 2003 and has since become one of the country's most influential and award-winning writers.

Lap-See Lam, artist who represented Sweden in the Nordic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2024.

Zara Larsson, one of Sweden's most internationally successful singers and songwriters in recent years.

Maxida Märak, musician and actor who combines Sami culture with contemporary international expressions in her music.

Mikael Niemi, author who made his big breakthrough with Populärmusik från Vittula (Popular Music from Vittula), awarded the August Prize in 2000. The TV series Koka björn (Cooking Bear), based on one of his novels, is currently airing.

Gudrun Persson, historian specialising in Russian security and foreign policy, since 2013 research director at the Swedish Defence Research Agency.

Johan Rockström, agronomist and environmental scientist, internationally renowned researcher in global sustainability, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.
