This summer’s exhibition, featuring some 30 portraits donated by the Gripsholm Association, presents a cavalcade of Swedish portraiture from the 1840s to the present day. The exhibition includes examples of everything from pure oil painting and draughtsmanship to photographic portraits.
The Swedish National Portrait Gallery at Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred, is the world’s oldest national portrait gallery. It was founded in 1822 and is managed by Nationalmuseum. A number of works are added to the collection each year, including an annual Portrait of Honour, donated by the Gripsholm Association, depicting a distinguished Swedish citizen. A selcecion of Portraits of Honour is always on display at the Castel, as part of the Swedish National Portrait Gallery.
This summer’s exhibition at Gripsholm Castle, Ten years of Portraits, presents a cavalcade of Swedish portraiture from the 1840s to the present day. The exhibition features some 30 portraits, all donated by the Gripsholm Association during the last decade. A feature which the works on display share is their intimate format. In technique and expression, however, they vary. The exhibition includes examples of everything from pure oil painting and draughtsmanship to photographic portraits, and both renowned and obscure artists are represented.
