In spring 2026, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum will present an exhibition featuring works from the collections of the Nationalmuseum. The exhibition, which is part of the Tokyo museum's 100th anniversary, focuses on the Swedish turn of the twentieth century and includes approximately 80 paintings by artists such as Carl Larsson, Bruno Liljefors, Fanny Brate, Eva Bonnier, Eugène Jansson, and Anders Zorn.
In recent years, Swedish painting has gained international attention through major exhibitions outside Sweden, including in France and the United States. This exhibition will be the first in Japan to trace the development of the Golden Age of Swedish art around the turn of the twentieth century. A total of 80 works will be presented under themes such as “Nature,” “Light,” and “The Sparkles of Everyday Life.”
The project has been developed in collaboration with curators from the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and the Yamaguchi Museum of Art. After its presentation in Tokyo, the exhibition will travel during the summer and autumn to art museums in Yamaguchi and Aichi.
