The Nationalmuseum is a state museum and therefore receives funding from the government to cover part of its fixed costs. However, activities such as exhibitions, educational programs for schools and children, research, and the acquisition of artworks for the collections are not financed by government grants. The museum manages your gift
Gifts and donations are recorded separately from state funding, which means they are never mixed with government grants. Your gift can therefore be preserved for several years and remains completely independent of government direction and budgets.
What can the gift be used for?
You may specify how you would like your gift to be used. If the gift is in the form of capital, you can indicate whether you would like it to go toward, for example, art acquisitions, educational activities, financial support for exhibitions, or conservation. However, it is not necessary to earmark your gift – the museum also gratefully accepts unrestricted donations that provide general financial support for its work.
Art and design objects as gifts
Donated artworks and design objects are regarded as new acquisitions and must therefore comply with the museum’s acquisition policy. Once an item or artwork enters the collection, the museum commits to preserving it for eternity, which means we cannot accept everything. Please feel free to consult with us in advance.
If the object you wish to donate has a high financial value but does not fit into the museum’s collection, we would appreciate the opportunity to sell it. If selling the object would go against your wishes and you want it to remain in a museum collection, we can suggest other museums that might be suitable recipients and can be named in your will instead.
Limitations
As the Nationalmuseum is a government agency, we cannot accept gifts that come with conditions or obligations. One such example would be a requirement that a donated artwork must always be on display – something that, for practical reasons, is not possible.

Would you like to remain anonymous?
If you wish for your bequest to be anonymous, please specify this in your will. In that case, your name will not be inscribed on the stone plaques or mentioned in any documents. The gift will be listed as from an “Anonymous donor,” along with the year.
How to proceed
Specify the amount or the object(s) you wish to bequeath to Nationalmuseum. If you wish, you can also indicate how the funds should be used. The lawyer drafting your will can assist you with this.

Om gåvan är i form av kapital kan du ange om du vill att medlen ska användas för exempelvis inköp av konst, pedagogisk verksamhet, ekonomiskt stöd till utställningar eller för bevarandefrågor (konservering). Du måste dock inte märka gåvan. Museet tar även tacksamt emot gåvor som generellt bidrar till att ekonomiskt stödja verksamheten.
Konst och designföremål som gåvor
Donerade konst- och designföremål räknas som nyförvärv och måste därför följa museets förvärvspolicy. Ett föremål eller konstobjekt som tas in i samlingarna åtar vi oss att bevara för evigheten så därför kan vi inte ta emot allt. Rådgör gärna med oss!
Om objektet som du vill donera har ett högt ekonomiskt värde, men inte passar in i museets samling, vill vi gärna få möjligheten att sälja föremålet. Om en försäljning strider mot din önskan, och du vill att föremålet ska bevaras i en museisamling, kan vi ge tips på andra museer som kan ta emot gåvan och stå som mottagare i testamentet.
Begränsningar
Eftersom Nationalmuseum är en statlig myndighet kan vi inte ta emot gåvor som omfattas av motkrav. Ett sådant motkrav är till exempel att konstföremål som doneras alltid måste visas. Detta är av praktiska skäl inte möjligt.

Vill du att din testamenterade gåva ska vara anonym så anger du det i testamentet. Då hugger vi inte in ditt namn på stentavlan och vi skriver inte ut ditt namn i våra dokument. Gåvan anges som via ”Anonym givare” samt årtal.
