The Magic North exhibition, featuring Nordic turn-of-the-century painting, has been produced by Nationalmuseum together with the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki and the National Museum in Oslo. For a whole year, it is on tour in Japan, where it will be shown in four different museums around the country.
The Magic North showcases Nordic painting from the latter half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. It presents around 70 works owned by the national galleries of Sweden, Norway, and Finland, and will introduce guests to richly poetic works of art that reflect the climates, sceneries, histories, and cultures of each country. The exhibition’s four major themes are the birth of Nordic romanticism, the nature of Scandinavia, ancient mythology and fairy tales, and the lives of people in the Nordic region.
From March 2024 to March 2025, The Magic North is touring Japan. It will be shown in four museums across the country.
