Simple Search

By entering one or more optional words (e.g., 'Rembrandt', 'Children', or 'Portrait Violinist') in the search field, you perform a free-text search across all fields in the database. If you enter multiple search terms, all terms must be present in a record for it to appear in the results. Search terms are not case-sensitive, meaning it doesn’t matter whether you use uppercase or lowercase letters.

Wildcard Characters

Wildcard characters (* and ?) are used to search for parts of words, where * represents any number of letters and ? represents a single letter.

A search for "s*l" will return "sal" and "sol" as well as "sadel" and "sardell" in the results.

A search for "Z?rich" will return both "Zurich" and "Zürich". Wildcards cannot be used at the beginning of a search term (e.g., rich is not allowed). Wildcards are ignored in search phrases (i.e., multiple words enclosed in quotation marks).

Example: "Portrait of a d*" will be interpreted as "Portrait of a d".

Special Characters

Accented characters are treated as their non-accented equivalents. (Exception: Fields with searchable dropdown menus.)

Examples:

à = a, ê = e, ü = u, etc.

The German sharp s (ß) is treated as "ss".

If you want to search specific database fields, click on 'Advanced Search'. Here you can combine your search by entering keywords in both the Simple Search and one or more of the additional fields.

Field Types

  • Standard text fields (for free text entry)
  • Fields with searchable dropdown lists: In these fields, you must choose a search term from a list. Search the list by typing the first letters of your keyword directly into the field. Then select a term from the list that appears. You can also open the full list by clicking the arrow on the right side of the field. It is possible to select more than one term from the list.
  • Date fields: “From year” and “To year” – enter a lower limit in the “from” field and an upper limit in the “to” field. If no lower limit is entered, all values up to the upper limit are returned. If no upper limit is entered, all values from the lower limit and upward are returned.
  • Yes/No fields (e.g., Objects with image): By selecting “Yes” or “No,” you can filter your search results to include only records that have an image (if you select Yes).
