Book your group for a private tour and immerse yourself in Rembrandt and other Dutch Golden Age painters.
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn was active during the 17th century, at a time often referred to as the "Dutch Golden Age". It was an artistically rich period and an exciting time both politically and economically. A freedom struggle was going on against Spain and the Netherlands became a free republic in 1648. The country was one of the few in Europe with religious freedom. Rembrandt's friends in his neighborhood in Amsterdam were Protestants, Catholics and Jews. Amsterdam was the hub of world trade.
The freedom struggle is the message in the great painting "The Batavian oath of allegiance to Claudius Civilis". The painting was originally five times as large and created for Amsterdam City Hall as a symbol of the free republic. Today, the painting belongs to the Academy of Fine Arts, but it is shown to the public at the National Museum. In this exhibition, we see, among other things, the large painting and an early self-portrait of Rembrandt for his last painting "Simeon and the Child Jesus".
