Book a private tour for your group to immerse yourselves in Rembrandt and other Dutch Golden Age painters.
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn lived in the 17th century, a time often referred to as 'the Dutch Golden Age'.
It was an artistically rich period and an exciting time, both politically and economically. After struggling to gain independence from Spain, the Netherlands became a free republic in 1648. The country was one of the few in Europe at the time with religious freedom. Rembrandt counted Protestants, Catholics and Jews among his friends in the bustling trade hub of Amsterdam.
The main message behind Rebrandt's monumental 'The Conspiracy of the Batavians under Claudius Civilis' is this very struggle for independence. Created for Amsterdam's City Hall as a symbol of the free republic, the painting was originally five times larger. Today, it belongs to the Swedish Academy of Fine Arts but is displayed at Nationalmuseum, where it hangs near an early self-portrait Rembrandt created for his last painting, 'Simeon in The Temple'.
